A remote training collar comes in a couple different varieties. They work by providing a slight shock, unpleasant spray in the dog’s face or audio tone upon correction without requiring the dog owner to be directly next to the dog. The dog wears a collar that provides the correction while the owner has a remote that triggers the correction from a specified range.

Proper Use of a Remote Training Collar:

These collars are controversial because of the propensity towards misuse. This type of training aid is meant to be used for a short period of time to train a dog avoid a specific task. Generally the tasks that these training aids are used for include those activities that would harm the dog: running into the street, interacting with snakes or chasing cars.

The correction should be at the lowest level necessary to elicit the proper response from the dog and the level should be reduced as the dog catches on. The corrections should be properly-timed so that the dog connects the correction to the specific action. Once again, these training collars are meant to be used for brief training periods and not as a long-term solution to any problem.
