Bark Collars
A bark collar is similar to a remote training collar except that there is no remote trigger for the correction. The collar itself contains a sensor that when triggered, will emit a shock or spray to correct the dog. New bark collars are triggered by the vibrations emitted when the dog barks, so the potential for other animals to set off the correction is minimal.
Proper Use of a Bark Collar:
Bark Collars, although a popular training aid for those wishing to silence dogs who bark incessantly, are not a reliable method for training a dog to not bark. They can be unpredictable and inconsistent, even with the advances in technology. In addition, many dogs will quickly learn to not bark when wearing the collar, but that it is ok to bark when they are not wearing the collar.
In addition, the bark collar can produce unwanted fear aggression in a dog. For example, if a dog routinely barks at passing strangers, the shock collar correction gives the dog an unpleasant memory that is associated with passing strangers. This can lead the dog to be aggressive towards strangers.
While barking can be a nuisance, it is best to find an alternate method of training the dog to not bark instead of using a Bark Collar.
